A Weight Restriction Order is necessary to help protect roads from damage that can cause untimely and expensive delays for road users who rely on the road network. Weight restrictions also help to avoid higher road maintenance costs as well as vehicle wear and tear. In addition, the restriction also limits access of heavy vehicles from unsuitable areas for their size such as narrow village roads, bridges or the placesthat may pose danger to pedestrians.

In Malaysia, all vehicle design and construction must comply to the Malaysia Weight Restrictions (Federal Roads) (Amendment) Order 2018. The order was gazetted on 30 October 2018 and came into operation on 31 October 2018. The date of enforcement of this updated order has yet to be announced by the authorities, but a source revealed that the authorities are going to enforce the order soon.

The entire vehicle must comply the maximum axle rating stated in that order. However, the load is dependent on dimensions of the wheelbase and axle spread. The maximum load for each vehicle is different for Peninsular and East (Sabah and Sarawak) Malaysia. Generally, the maximum permissible load in Sabah and Sarawak is less due to condition of the road and road infrastructure. Weight Restriction Orders are enforced across the county by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

In addition, in Road Transport Act 1997, Section 86: Restriction of vehicles on the bridges stated that vehicle using bridges cannot exceed the permissible load specified in the regulation based on their construction. Furthermore, the need of a conspicuous notice at each end of the bridge is also stated in the act and the notice should reflect the allowable weight and the speed limit.

The last Scania PGR series truck rolled has off the assembly line at the Scania Regional Production Centre in Port Klang.

Scania Malaysia has produced and sold more than 2,500 units of the Scania PGR series trucks since they were first introduced in the country in 2008.

Since the series that brought together engineering and ergonomics was introduced in 2004, more than 800,000 PGR trucks have been delivered globally.

Differentiated by the size and design of the cabs, the P-series, R-series (both introduced in 2004) and G-series (introduced in 2007) trucks offered powerful performance and increased fuel savings that helped Scania customers attain the best profitability during long-haul operations.

Owners of the Scania PGR series trucks need not worry however as the phase out will not impact their existing vehicles which can still be serviced as usual at Scania service centres.
Scania’s PGR series has provided the best especially in terms of the improved fuel economy, enhanced safety and performance, higher uptime and being environmentally friendly.

Nevertheless, this remarkable truck rolled off the assembly line here today marks the end to an era which has given Scania a strong foothold in Malaysia’s commercial vehicle industry. The new truck generation from Scania, soon to be launched in Malaysia, will mark the beginning of an exciting era for Scania and our customers. It will provide even better fuel economy, improved performance and cab safety, increased uptime and reduced CO2 emissions, following from the legacy of Scania’s PGR truck series.

“We say goodbye to the remarkable PGR series. Scania will continue to improve the quality of our products and services in order to drive the shift towards a sustainable transport system, said Chief Financial Officer of Scania Southeast Asia Eunjoo Chun.”

A truck is a truck is a truck is no longer an applicable thought. With the vastly different applications that there are, trucks have also become very specialised and highly diverse. And with that diversification in missions also comes the need to address the profiles of the jobs with appropriate components and consumables.

Lubricants are one such area where the mission profile will have a major impact. As the group of lucky winners of the Shell Ultimate Stopover learned on their recent trip to Dubai, Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) should be used with specific lubricants made for them. Here is why.
Light Duty trucks experience different driving conditions compared to heavy duty vehicles, which is why they have specific lubrication needs. Shell Rimula has launched a new range of oils – In Malaysia it is the Shell Rimula LD4 (15W-40) and LD5 (10W-40)– designed to tackle the extremes of urban driving. As a light duty trucker, constant starting and stopping in traffic causes sludge to build in your engine, which means more wear on engine parts which are vital to your operation.

Shell Rimula Light Duty Range uses Dynamic Protection and Dynamic Protection Plus Technology*. The base oil combined with a high performance additive package breaks down sludge to help combat wear and protects your engine, reducing the risk of vehicle downtime so you can stay on the move.

Soot build-up in particular is an issue for commercial vehicles. Soot loading in diesel engine oil can present wear problems. Diesel engines consume a carbon-rich fossil fuel that releases soot as a byproduct of combustion. Soot consists of micrometer-scale particles of elemental carbon. The existence of soot signifies incomplete combustion, which suggests an incorrect air/fuel ratio, improper combustion temperature, insufficient residence time in the combustion zone, and/or non-availability of sufficient oxidants (another way to say that the air/fuel ratio is too fuel-rich).

Soot is harmful in a number of ways when at excess levels in engine oil, but primarily through abrasion; especially if the carbon is agglomerated into clumps, which can cause valvetrain, ring and liner wear. Soot loading also causes a viscosity increase, which inhibits oil flow, especially in cold weather starts where the soot-laden engine oil can increase the time it takes for the oil to reach critical engine parts, such as the valvetrain.

Variable Loads
The issue: The operation of a light duty truck is built around carrying variable loads, which can cause higher engine temperatures leading to a build-up of soot and deposits on engine parts.
The solution: Shell Rimula Light Duty Range offers Dynamic Protection Technology for improved engine cleanliness. This results in up to 50 % less Carbon deposits (Shell Rimula LD5).

Start / Stop Operation
The issue: For light duty truck drivers constant starting and stopping in traffic causes sludge to build in their engine, which means more wear on engine parts which are vital to their operation.

The solution: Shell Rimula Light Duty Range offers Dynamic Protection Technology to protect your engine against wear and sludge. Through this, between 30 percent (Shell Rimula LD4) and 57 percent (Shell Rimula LD5) better wear protection can be achieved.

Increased Engine Idling
The issue: Being stuck in slow moving traffic for long periods, or high idle engine running is unavoidable for light duty drivers. High motor hours relative to distance covered leads to slower oil mileage accumulation. So, they need an oil that protects during these types of service.

The solution: Shell Rimula Light Duty Range offers Dynamic Protection Technology for a longer oil life.

*Dynamic Protection Plus Technology is included in Grade LD5 only.

Nowadays, commercial vehicles are used as food trucks, delivery vehicles as well as mobile boutique to meet the current market trend in Malaysia. Attendees to the show will be able to witness the transformation of the Gran Max to reflect its durability, versatility, practicality and reliability” he concluded.

Volvo Trucks Malaysia recently hosted a vehicle handover ceremony for its long-time customer – Kotamas Oil Sdn Bhd. The official handover of 15 units of Volvo FMX 440 6x4 prime movers was held at Volvo Truck’s private dealer, Dai Lieng Machinery Sdn Bhd in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The ceremony was attended by the senior management team members of Dai Lieng, Kotamas as well as the Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Malaysia.

Kotamas is a specialist in petroleum haulage in Sabah, servicing clientele such as Petronas and Shell. A strong business partner of Volvo Trucks in East Malaysia, Kotamas already owns and operates 12 Volvo trucks in their business. Kotamas now owns a total of 27 Volvo trucks.

Rusman Bin Japalus, Managing Director of Kotamas Oil Sdn Bhd said, “As one of the largest fleet operator in the state of Sabah, we needed trucks that are capable of withstanding the rough conditions that our drivers work in, both in terms of terrain which is hilly and bumpy as well as unpredictable wet weather. We needed trucks that were not just dependable, but also safe for our drivers given the working conditions. Volvo Trucks is the company that provide trucks which are able to fulfill all the safety requirements outlined by the reputable oil and gas companies we work with. So having partnered with Volvo since 2014, we are confident that once again, they will be able to provide us with the solutions we need.

This handover marks the first time that a company is receiving the custom made FMX 440 with Tandem Axle Lift in Malaysia. Volvo Trucks is also the only commercial vehicles manufacturer to offer this variant for prime movers in the country. One of the challenges faced by Kotamas was the hilly and rough terrain their trucks needed to go through, which demanded increased traction from the vehicle and often resulted in additional costs spent on tyres. After reviewing Kotamas needs, Volvo Trucks Malaysia recommended these tailor-made prime movers that leverages on Volvo’s Tandem Axle Lift technology.

Tandem Axle Lift is designed for operations where the driver drives heavily loaded in one direction and empty in the other. With the push of a button on the dashboard, the driver can disengage and raise the drive axle to improve fuel efficiency by up to 4% on average. As soon as the truck is loaded, the drive axle automatically lowers and engages to ensure maximum traction and driveability. This system allows for extra grip on hilly terrains, providing better traction, tighter turning circles and improves overall fuel efficiency. It also reduces the money spent on replacing tyres worn out by travelling on rough terrain, thereby maximising the uptime of the truck and at the same time, reducing overall operational costs.

“The technology that goes into the Tandem Axle Lift is truly remarkable and is a perfect fit for customers that need a prime mover which regularly travels on rough terrain. This is especially true for customers based in East Malaysia where roads are riddled with pot holes and sometimes not tarred, uneven and hilly,” said Peden.

“This handover is truly a momentous occasion for us at Volvo Trucks Malaysia as it marks the first ever handover of the FMX 440 with Tandem Axle Lift in the country. One of our objectives here at Volvo Trucks Malaysia is to maximise the uptime of our customers and reduce costs through our offerings. I am certain that with this handover, Kotamas will be able to face their geographical challenges and further increase the profitability of their company.”

It is Volvo Trucks’ mission to provide quality, both in terms of products and service. With that in mind, Volvo hopes to continue fostering the close relationship they have with Kotamas in the future, by providing innovative solutions and support to maximise the uptime of their trucks and ensure productivity.
