"Firstly, the economic growth globally will be in Asia. Scania has tremendous ambitions to grow. Traditionally, Europe has been the driving force of Sales for Scania. The ration between Europe and outside Europe is dramatically changing with Asia taking centre- stage. The real opportunity lies in the fact that the infrastructure in many Asian countries is not as developed as in Europe. So, we are not only talking about the sales of vehicles, but about a chance actively shaping the industry."
AT: Have you managed to shape the trucking industry and if so, how and what was the impact you have made?
JA: Clearly, the company has played a major part in shaping the industry, yes! We have actively helped to improve the image of the transport industry. With our focus on sustainable transportation solutions, we have educated and advanced the markets. Scania is very active when it comes to promoting an approach of low impact on the environment and we also advocate low fuel consumption. In terms of safety, we have also achieved a lot. The addition of the drivers lounge here in Bukit Jelutong is just one such example. The idea is to help drivers do a better job and no one would argue with the notion that a well rested driver is a safer one too.
Not only have we contributed, but we have also highlighted issues. The spotlight is on crucial issues. Our Scania Driver Competition saw record numbers of participants and there has been a lot of attention in the mainstream media. People are becoming more aware of the issues in the trucking business and develop an understanding. Through this competition, we were able to elevate the importance of road safety.
Scania is also very blessed as we have a lot of support from Authorities, especially here in Malaysia. JKJR joined us for the launch of the driver's lounge and one has to say that the speech of Dato Dr. Tam was spot on and hit the issues. Safety for passenger transportation is one of the next items that is very high up on our agenda.
AT: How do you tackle the issues of road safety you mention?
JA: There are a number of factors that contribute to road safety. You need to look at load. Not to overload and the right distribution of your load are crucial to begin with. Obviously, you need to have the right vehicle for the job you carry out. Traffic conditions play another role (Armstrong already pointed the excellent infrastructure in Malaysia out in our first interview with him). However, it is still very much the driver that is at the centre of everything. You need to have the right attitude, training and vehicle. Ultimately, it is the driver that is and will be responsible for the safe handling of the truck or bus.
