An Operasi Pemeriksaan Pemandu Bas (Bus Drivers Examinations Operation) was conducted at 25 bus terminals from June 9 to June 19 in conjunction with the Hari Raya holidays. National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) director-general Datuk Dr Abd Halim Mohd Hussin said the operation was part of a road safety programme that was conducted in cooperation with the police and Road Transport Department to run urine tests on express bus drivers.

A total of 2,624 inspections were conducted during the period. 10 drivers were tested positive for drugs and therefore had their licences suspended and detained under Section 3(1) of the Drugs Dependant (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.

Nada is constantly monitoring and conducting inspections on bus drivers to ensure they are free from drug influence as road safety is of utmost importance particularly with buses due to the sheer amount of passengers it carries. Inspections should be carried out regularly particularly during festive seasons when many people are on the road.

A same operation conducted last year saw 2,989 bus drivers being inspected and amongst them, 14 tested positive for drugs.
