Nitrogen filling for commercial tyres
The benefit of using nitrogen benefit in commercial vehicles tyres has been known for many years ago. Nitrogen inflation started in the US. The gas itself, which is an inert gas preventing oxidation, therefore it can be applied to many industries. Nitrogen is a dry and clean gas, it can prevent tyre oxidation. Is Nitrogen safe?
About 78% of the air we breathe is Nitrogen. Nitrogen is a non-flammable, inert gas which does not support combustion, as oxygen does. It will not cause any increased chance of an explosion or fire during a vehicle accident. Therefore, nitrogen is actually much safer than compressed air for virtually any tyre application - and one reason why it is used by commercial aircraft and professional racing teams around the world. Effect of Temperature
The pressure in nitrogen filled tyres will change when the temperature changes, just as it does with air filled tyres, because nitrogen and oxygen respond to changes in ambient temperature in a similar manner. For example, when your vehicle is parked it will lose a similar amount of pressure for every 10 degree change in temperature, whether the tyres are filled with nitrogen or air. However, nitrogen does not contain the moisture and other contaminants found in compressed air. As a result, when driving and the tyres heat up, nitrogen filled tyres will fluctuate less in temperature and pressure than air filled tyres. The bottom line is, you will still see pressure changes with nitrogen but, overall, your tyres will run cooler and at a more consistent pressure than if they were filled with air. When the loads that carried by the vehicle become heavier, the pressure will increase and may cause the tyre to overheat. By using nitrogen gas, it will prevent this matter and 21% cooler that the normal air.
